The Watchening: Overlord Ep. 4

Religious orders: Always the greatest evil.
Religious orders: Always the greatest evil.

Well, if nothing else, it’s adhering to standard RPG tropes to a T.

We start the episode off learning that the enemy is of the Slane Theocracy, and the leader of the force attacking the village has been given a special item.  His orders are to kill the head warrior of the empire, Gazef.

Momonga refuses to help Gazef defeat the enemy, but he gives him an item and promises to protect the village.  Turns out, the enemy has summoned Archangel Flares – monsters from the game Yggdrasill.

Ohhh shit, it's a Mu Guardian!

Gazef kills a lot of angels, but the summoners keep summoning more.  That’s kinda what summoners do.  After way too much time spent on showing the same shit over and over again, Gazef gets transported back to the village, and Momonga switches places.  He notices that the Slane Theocracy is using magic and items from Yggdrasill as well.  He also completely wrecks ’em, even one-shotting the highest-level summon they have.

I'm starting to think Yggdrasill was a horribly broken MMO.

Blah blah blah, boring chat with Albedo, Momonga returns to his guild hall and proclaims he’s changed his name to Ains Ooal Gown and gives the order to make this name an eternal legend in this new world.

After the credits, Demiurge talks about his chat with Momonga earlier and Albedo kind of makes it official that their goal is to conquer the world.

As someone who has absolutely no knowledge of the source material… I question if Ep. 3-4 had to be a two-parter.  It seems like it easily could have been one episode.  Also, we randomly learn that a village girl’s name is Nemu.  That’s info we could have gone without, so I wonder if those villagers are actually going to be relevant later.  I honestly don’t care either way; it’s just odd.

So far, the primary reason to watch Overlord is for the sheer curbstomp factor.  That and the gore.  But then again, we have GATE for superior curbstomping… but not the gore.  In that respect, Overlord feels a bit cathartic in comparison since it doesn’t shy away from violence.

Looking forward to seeing what connection the Slane Theocracy has to Yggdrasill.  Did they just happen upon Yggdrasill items that got transported to this world?  Is their leader an Yggdrasill player?  Does this world just coincidentally have similar elements from Yggdrasill?  My money is on #2, mixed with some time travel bullshit.
