Oh ho ho, I hope you’re intrigued by that title.  We are about to step into some serious shit.  Because YOU KNOW WHAT DAY IT IS!

This week, we’re going to be looking into a VERY specific subgenre.  It’s surprising because as far as I can tell, there isn’t a name for it, but THERE’S SO MUCH OF IT.

Now, when you think hentai subgenres, the usual suspects show up: tentacle rape, NTR, lolicon… and then a whole bunch of regular genres like horror, romance (AKA “vanilla”), comedy, action…

Let me be clear.  BDSM is a genre.  Rape is a genre.  This goes beyond combining BDSM and rape.  This is part of a trend where a VERY SPECIFIC story is told. I call it a subgenre because the alternative is admitting it’s the EXACT SAME THING being rehashed with different characters and fetishes over and over again.

Here’s the rundown for the typical Disgraced Princess show.

1. There’s a war.

2. There’s an evil rapist with an army consisting of bandits and/or monsters / demons.

3. There’s a female warrior or princess (usually both) who opposes the evil army.

4. Her allies are all defeated by the evil army, and in order to save those important to her, she gives herself up to the enemy and endures humiliation and rape, and the bad guy probably doesn’t make good on his promises.

5. The villain usually wins and receives no comeuppance whatsoever.

That is a VERY specific set, right?  And yet there are about a dozen hentai anime that are EXACTLY like this.  Now, there will be some variation.  On one or two occasions, the villain actually did get what was coming to him.  Sometimes, there’s no deal to save the main character’s allies and we just skip from defeating the main character to raping her.  But it’s all basically the same thing.

Let’s start things out with what I think is a perfect microcosm of this subgenre: Himekishi Olivia.

Himekishi Olivia’s first episode was released in December 2013.  Its second episode came out June 2014 and ended with a tease for a third episode.  That third episode is not out, but considering the timing, I’d say we’re about due.

The show starts out with something typical: a quick glossing over of the story.  This way, no time is wasted on setup; it’s all about maximizing the amount of time spent on rape.

We waste no time in getting to our first rape scene, as some nameless prisoner is gangbanged by genetically modified orcs (made to be capable of impregnating humans).  The raping is shown on some magical TV screen in front of Olivia, who has already surrendered and been bound.

This always plays out the same way.  Olivia says some defiant stuff, Cecil reminds her that if she doesn’t do what he says, their prisoners will suffer, and then she submits.  Then she suffers embarrassments far worse than she was expecting, yada yada yada…

Yeah, it’s pretty much 20 minutes of Olivia getting fucked in various positions and being subjected to magical devices.  Like a potion that makes her breasts hypersensitive and lactate.  Or a tentacle molestation device that stops groping her just before she can climax.

Now, remember I said there’s a second episode.  When it comes to a series like this, you have two options: come up with more ways to degrade the heroine, or bring in a new victim.  Himekishi Olivia decides to go with both.

We are shown the backstory of the new target, Princess Teresa.

Teresa was saved by Cecil a long time ago and developed a crush on him.  She joined her country’s military specifically so she could have him as a subordinate, but Cecil managed to rise up the ranks faster, which is surprising since he’s a human and she’s the daughter of the king.

Anyway, Teresa wants Cecil to stop because she really only wants his D in her and no one else.  Cecil kinda enjoys raping chicks all day, so he hypnotizes her.  Because Cecil can do WHATEVER THE HELL WE NEED HIM TO DO.

Cecil interrogates Teresa to figure out who sent her to investigate him, but he internally monologues that he already forced her to admit everything earlier.  So this is just for fun.  And he ALREADY KNOWS that Teresa is in love with him.  If he wanted to, he could have her anytime.  THIS IS JUST FOR FUN.  Jeezus, why?!

After he has his fun with Teresa, he sees a pretty blonde elf run by, and we finally get a flashback to shed light on Cecil’s motivation.  There was this blonde human girl he was into a while back.  She was raped and tortured.  The elf girl reminds him of her.

So, we’re close to putting the pieces together, but rather than explore, we just have Cecil raping Olivia for the rest of the episode.  Then after the credits, we see the elf girl was sent to marry Cecil as a show of good will from her country.  I assume episode 3 is going to be 40% raping her, 40% raping Olivia, and 10% wrapping up Cecil’s backstory.

That was Himekishi Olivia.  We’ve still got plenty to go.

As far as I can tell, the earliest anime of this subgenre is 1994’s Princess Road.  Or, as the fine fellows at Media Blasters renamed it for the benefit of our inferior minds, Erotic Torture Chamber.

We start off with the Demon Dragon King (wow, what a handful…) attacking a castle.  Unexpectedly, the old king of the castle won’t go down without a fight.

The king and queen are killed, and the prince and princess taken prisoner.

Elsewhere, in the kingdom of Asronia, we meet our princess, Yurie.  It doesn’t take long for her to get kidnapped from her ninja bodyguard Maya.

The Demon Dragon King removes his armor and tells Yurie to call him Andreas.

We learn that the princess from before has been turned into his pleasure slave, and the prince is… alive.

Oh, and the prince is also Yurie’s fiancee.  She’s allowed to see Prince Elias again if she agrees to be one of Andreas’ pleasure slaves.  And if that isn’t motivation enough, he also adds sparing a nearby village’s female population from the fate of being raped all night and fed to dragons in the morning.  So Yurie agrees.  But since the girls are already being raped, I guess they’re just saved from being dragon chow.

So Yurie becomes his pleasure slave, we see some relatively tame stuff (compared to what we would see from later works of the genre), we learn Andreas’ second-in-command was magically granted a penis for… some bullshit reason, and Prince Elias was, expectedly, made into her own pleasure slave.

Surprisingly, only about 40% of the episode consists of her being subjected to sex and humiliation.  We also see scenes of the Asronian army preparing for war, Maya training to infiltrate Andreas’ castle, and Andreas thinking to himself that Yurie needs to open herself up to him to unlock some kind of power.

Will Maya succeed?  What is Yurie’s hidden secret?  What is Andreas’ true motivation?  Hell if anyone knows, because that’s the only episode they ever made.

Still, I don’t know if it’s because it’s an older anime, but Erotic Torture Chamber is one of the few of its kind that actually tries to flesh out the villains.  What’s more par for the course is the villain is just evil and easily conquers the forces of good, and the series ends with the main heroines being raped, the end.

Moving on, if I were to pick an anime that really popularized the subgenre into what it is now, I’d have to guess it was Ikusa Otome Valkyrie.  Or, as Media Blasters renamed it, Ride of the Valkyrie.  I have to say, that’s probably the second-best porno pun title given to a hentai.  Sure as hell beats low-level shit titles like Samurai XXX, Slutty-Princess Diaries, and Invasion of the Boobie-Snatchers.  Valkyrie doesn’t entirely fit the formula, but it follows roughly the same structure.

So, a demonic army has risen up against Odin, but they are thwarted by the deadly beauty known as Valkyrie.  About three minutes into the episode, this happens:

Turns out, she was betrayed by Freya, who revealed to the demons that a war maiden is completely powerless if you steal their ring.  Now why would Freya betray Odin and hand over one of his greatest warriors to be humiliated as a sex slave?

So, Valkyrie gets sexed, but she says all she needs to do is bide her time and her allies will save her.  Except Freya’s on their side, and Valkyries friend Skuld is easy pickings.

So yeah, Valkyrie is made to submit to her captors if she wants them to leave Skuld alone.  Gee, I wonder if they’ll keep to their word?

After a night of raping, Valkyrie is exposed at a public demonstration, and she’s raped by male prisoners one by one.  The end.

But we’ve got another episode.  Don’t leave me in suspense!  What’s going to happen?  Is Skuld going to try to rescue Valkyrie, only to end up being a sex slave?

Actually, it turns out that was a ruse so Skuld can find their base.  She sneaks further in and finds Freya and Valkyrie being perverted.  Skuld tries to fight and gives Valkyrie a sword to help, but Valkyrie figures she’s just going to be a slave to the D, and Skuld is easily overpowered.

So, all that’s left is a series of sex scenes that culminates in Valkyrie willingly raping Skuld until she gets pregnant (I guess I forgot to mention she and Freya were given penises so they could do each other).

The end.

But that’s not the end of this franchise.  You see, there’s a sequel series: Ikusa Otome Valkyrie 2.

One minute into the first episode, we see the war maiden Aliya is captured by the villain Duke, and forced to be his sex slave.  She was betrayed by her comrade Leia, who was already made a sex slave and turned into a “Black Valkyrie.”

Aliya is the strongest war maiden there is, and she was just about to deliver an ass-whooping of a lifetime when Leia stole her ring.  I have to say, that’s one hell of a weakness.

The episode ends with a whole lotta raping and Duke talking about his plans for the upcoming eclipse.  Which is weird since they already took down Odin’s strongest warrior.

The next episode starts off with the war maiden Hildegarde already caught.

For the record, that’s all cheesecake frosting.  Trust me.

After about 20 minutes of raping, Duke reveals that all of that was just to kill time.  He then hands the war maidens over to an army of demons.

But wait!  We’ve got a THIRD episode!  HOW COULD WE POSSIBLY TAKE THIS STORY FURTHER?!

The three war maidens get tortured and raped for half an hour.  The end.

EPILOGUE: One year later…

…the war maidens get raped.  THE END.

I… guess they just forgot about making a big deal out of the eclipse.

Thought we were done with Valkyrie?  NOT YET.

There’s Ikusa Otome Valkyrie Shinsou, which is a retelling of the first with worse animation and better story.  After 50 minutes of rape, Valkyrie breaks free, rescues Skuld, and attempts to rescue Freya before it’s revealed Freya’s a slut, and Skuld was just pretending to escape so she could trap Valkyrie.

Next, we have Ikusa Otome Valkyrie G.  It’s basically a continuation of the second Valkyrie series, and introduces Fafnir and Fenrir,  beast-girls.  Because why not?

Spoiler alert: it’s 50 minutes of rape.

Now, there are more Valkyrie hentai out there, but they’re all done by different companies.  Ikusa Otome Valkyrie is based on a game series by Rune.  There is no relation between them and others like the similarly-named Ikusa Otome Suvia.

Oh hey, remember when I said Ride of the Valkyrie was the second-best porno pun title for a hentai?  Wanna know what the #1 title is?

Elfen Laid.

We start out with villagers being raped.  An evil empire is sweeping across rural territories and doing what they want.  Theodora, the princess of one of the rural clans is captured.  We all know what her fate will be.

The princess agrees to submit to whatever the enemy commander wants as long as her captive sister Helena is kept safe.  The commander agrees, and as his first order, he has Theodora lead an army against the remaining clans.  Unexpected?  You bet.  That’s because we got hit with the ol’ bait-and-switch.  While Theodora’s away, Helena is made into the first sex slave.  Bet you thought the order was going to be the other way around, right?

Funnily enough, we get some decent introspection with Theodora, and she doesn’t even lose her virginity until two-thirds of the way through the second episode.  Now THAT is restraint.

After a scene where the commander chokes Helena while doing her, we have a scene where he drops Helena’s bloodied dress in front of Theodora, enraging her before she’s easily overpowered and raped.

The next morning, he reveals Helena is in fact alive, and gives Theodora an escape plan and Helena’s location.

The end.  Huh… Well that’s new.

Finally, I’m gonna wrap this up with what’s probably one of the most popular and recent titles in this subgenre, Kuroinu Kedakaki Seijou wa Hakudaku ni Somaru.   Or Kuroinu for short.  It’s notable because of the quality animation and the sheer variety of sexy character designs.  Hell, they even made great character designs for a dozen nameless rape victims.

Again, we waste no time going into the sex.  We learn through random narration in between sex footage that humans have been engaged in a lengthy war against demons.  Then one day, a dark castle appeared.  This castle is under the domain of the Dark Queen, who has control over all the demons around her castle.  So that makes her a villain.

Also, the main forces against the demons are a group of seven “princess knights.”  But if we’re being completely honest, they should be called the “seven victims.”

The rapists are led by Volt, a commander who united the mercenary forces of the humans into a single mercenary unit: Black Dog.

It’s difficult to tell who we should be rooting for here.

The Queen casts a spell that impregnates herself with a dark spirit.  Thus, none of the mercenaries’ cum can enter her womb.  When they respond by saying that just means they can screw her as many times as they want, she loses her confidence, and deservedly so because that was a fucking retarded plan.

After a few rounds of fucking, Volt talks to his mage, who casts a spell to undo the Queen’s spell, allowing everyone to cum inside her.

…yay, tactics?

Second episode, we have Alicia being forced to give herself up to demons to save some nuns.

We also learn Volt’s plan.  He took control of the dark castle and began establishing a new nation.  In Volt’s kingdom, all women are turned into sex slaves to service all men who pass by.  And I have to say, when it comes to reasons to betray your entire race… that’s a pretty impressive one.

Anyway, Alicia gets raped a lot, and then we learn Prim was also captured and raped, which is par for the course.

Well, that’s one Dark Queen and two Princess Knights down.  Five Princess Knights to go.

With episode 3, we have Maia, who has history with Volt and feels the most betrayed by his actions.

And we have Ruru, the bratty battle-freak loli.

And finally, Kaguya, the shrine maiden princess.

Kaguya’s the only one of the three who has a gimmick.  In her case, she has a spell tag on her vagina, which protects her virginity by redirecting penises away and into her butt.  Yeah.  Unlike the Dark Queen, however, no mage is necessary to break this spell.  It’s broken by having one demon stick its penis into her butt while another demon pierces through since there’s nowhere for it to be redirected.  It’s hilarious is what it is.

Kaguya is also the most easily corrupted one.  She very quickly becomes addicted to penises, and the shrine maidens she saves by giving her body up look down on her and proclaim she’s no longer fit to lead them.  Harsh.

Next episode, there’s two Princess Knights left.

Yeah, no surprises here.

Holy Knight Claudia is defeated a minute and a half into the episode.  By her father.  Now, what would possess him to turn against his own daughter?

Uh…

Yeah.

Well, if it makes it any better, he’s not her father biologically. He’s her father-in-law and mentor.  Still a father figure though, and that’s still creepy.

So, all that’s left is Celestine, the reincarnation of a goddess.

To celebrate her surrender, Volt fucks Celestine during a public address.

But we still have 10 minutes to go, so we fill up the rest of the episode with a whole lotta gang rapes before Volt’s Country of Service is officially established and recognized by the living goddess.

Well, we covered a lot of disgraced princess anime, and there’s still a lot out there.  Hime Dorei, Himekishi Angelica, Buta-Hime-sama, Inda no Himekishi Janne, Princess Knight Catue, Elf Hime Nina, Slutty Princess Diaries…  About 80% of the titles out there that has “Hime” or “Kishi” in it, basically.  And if it has the word “Himekishi” in it, then definitely.

I like to cite this subgenre as proof of the creative drain of recent hentai.  There’s really nowhere you can take the general premise.  It’s at the point where making another one is pointless unless you can back it up with outstanding character designs like Kuroinu does.  But you can bet more of this will come out, and it will keep getting bought.

In later weeks, I’ll explore other subgenres, as the disgraced princess subgenre is far from the only rehashed hentai formula, though I do consider it by far the most amusingly specific one.  The hentai OVAs of the last few years have been oversaturated with similar 20-minute rape-fests, and I’m constantly surprised that studios can keep coming up with the budget to make them.  I suppose there will just always be a market for fresh fap material.
