It’s time to free up some hard drive space. Let’s run through the rest of Overlord IN ONE GO!
It’s a little unfortunate that I dropped Overlord when I did, because I think episode 6 was by far the strongest one. It’s mostly just Momonga-as-Ainz-as-Momon traveling with the adventurers, but there’s some good banter, some insight into Momonga’s feelings, and more world-building.
Momon shows off how powerful he is to impress the party, and the campfire scene is probably one of my favorite scenes of the entire series so far. Probably because characters are actually acting like, well, characters.
Oh, and more Clementine doing Clementine things.
Um… yeah, fuck Clementine. More boring than Albedo.
Next episode!
The party arrives at the village (which is coincidentally the same village “Ainz” saved). Nphirea (the alchemist kid they’re supposed to be protecting) finds out that Momon is Ainz but promises to keep his secret because he’s grateful he saved the village (and the chick he’s into).
They’re warned not to fight the Wise King of the Forest, but Momon wants to get his name known, so he tells Aura to go out and lure the Wise King to him for a fight. When he comes face to face with the beast, he just doesn’t have the heart to kill him.
It seems to everyone other than Momon, this giant hamster actually looks wise and ferocious… which is probably more hilarious than it has any right to be. Momon decides to tame the hamster.
That night, Nphiria bumps into Clementine. Fuck.
I will say this: Clementine’s voice actress does a great job selling her.
Next episode!
Totally saw this coming. Kind of a cheap trick, but one I used myself, so can’t complain.
Yeah, Clementine totally wasted everyone and made them undead, forcing Momon to double-kill them. Oh, and we find out Ninya was a girl.
Momon and Nabe use a shitload of utility magic to track down Nphirea. He’s surrounded by zombies… and for some reason appears to have been stripped into something a little more comfortable…
So, Momon and Nabe show up and split up. Nabe takes on the old wizard, and Momon duels Clementine, promising not to take the fight seriously out of spite.
Next episode!
A skeletal dragon that is immune to magic is summoned. Nabe beats it to death with a sheathed sword.
So the old necromancer summons a SECOND skeletal dragon. Now Nabe actually has to put in some effort.
Meanwhile, Momon and Clementine fight somewhat evenly, with Clementine completely outclassing Momon with speed and precision, as well as close-quarters magic enhancements. Momon decides to take off the kiddie gloves and orders Nabe to do the same. She uses higher-tier magic to destroy the dragons (which only nullify sixth-tier and lower), and Momon reveals his true form.
Ainz delivers a rather satisfying slow bear hug of DOOM, crushing the life out of Clementine as she struggles in vain. So tasty.
Finally, Nphirea is saved, and… my eyes did not deceive me. He really is dressed like that.
Momon is successful, and his rank is advanced to Mithril. He checks in with Albedo and learns that Shalltear has revolted.
Next episode!
We take a step back and find out what Shalltear was doing before the revolt. She was searching for skilled martial artists since Ainz/Momon wanted someone to learn from, presumably so he could continue posing as a great warrior.
With her was Sebas and one of the Pleiades, who has some… strange tastes and abilities.
Shalltear attacks a bandit cave and goes after a skilled fighter named Brain, who kinda isn’t quite as impressive as the stories say.
Shalltear goes fucking nuts throughout the entire cave, fights some adventurers outside, and finds out there’s a second group elsewhere.
Said group seems to be prepared for vampires, and she’s caught in a trap. This worries Ainz, since if this world has abilities that can turn his OP NPCs against Nazarick, they could be in trouble.
Next episode!
Momon is called in to deal with the vampire. He tries to go alone, but another asshole adventurer tries to wedge his way into the party. He is dealt with immediately.
That was probably the single most assholish thing Ainz did in the entire series.
Ainz uses a magic item that uses super-tier magic, but it has no effect on Shalltear, meaning that she’s under the control of a “World Item.” Not… a very fitting name.
As Uncle would say, magic must defeat magic, so Ainz returns to Nazarick to raid the mausoleum where the guild’s World Item stash is hidden. We also see the NPC Ainz himself actually designed: Pandora’s Actor.
I have to say, it’s actually pretty amusing seeing Ainz’s reactions to how lame the character he designed is. He’s had to have his emotions regulated multiple times because of how ashamed he is.
The next scene in the mausoleum is another great one. For some reason, I’m a real sucker for the scenes where Ainz thinks about his old guildmates.
Ainz tells Albedo that he plans on fighting Shalltear by himself, and… the scene goes on for entirely too long. Just… we get it. You might die, but you’re sure you can beat her. I think the most important thing here is that Ainz is aware that this could be a trap, and if so, what kind of enemy would prepare such a trap?
Next episode!
The battle between Ainz and Shalltear begins. It’s basically a mage’s wet dream with spells and counterspells being flung with reckless abandon.
To be honest, it’s really just shouting a whole bunch of impressive-sounding spells that the audience should have zero connection to, so the effect is a bit lessened… But then THIS happens.
Y’know, I think I can forgive any flaws Overlord has because of the existence of this spell alone.
In the end, Ainz destroys everything with a death spell, only for Shalltear to be revived by an item she was given by her creator.
Shalltear and Ainz now have barely any MP, but Shalltear has near full HP. The final battle in the final episode is about to begin…
But first… really? Fucking really? All of that buildup, and the final battle of the series is against fucking SHALLTEAR?! I mean, I know she’s under the control of someone from this new world, but it still feels like Ainz has done nothing but steamroll over everyone in the world. I just really can’t get into a final battle like this…
So, final episode…
Ainz reveals that he’s been playing Shalltear the whole time by faking his weaknesses and hiding his true data. He now begins his counterattack by using ALL of his comrades’ world items.
I can’t help but think this would have been a stronger scene if we knew more about the guild members. We know plenty about how Ainz felt about them, but barely anything about the other members themselves. The flashback involving Touch Me pays dividends when Ainz summons his armor, but if we had flashbacks of the other members, the summoning of their items would have felt a lot more fulfilling.
Anyway, Ainz defeats Shalltear and begins a ritual to resurrect her.
Shalltear is revived, but she has no memory of the fight or her mind control, so we still don’t know who’s behind it.
Well, the epilogue shows us it was people in the Slane Theocracy, and they were forced to escape before they could complete the mind control. We also see Brain and Gazeff meet up, and… no one cares because we had to waste all that time on the Shalltear fight (not that I didn’t enjoy it, but two fucking episodes, really?) Sebas is being used as bait to draw out the people that used the world item, and Momon has been promoted to Adamantite rank.
Overall, a disappointing finale, but it had its moments. I think I would have stuck with Overlord through the entire initial run if I just gave it one more episode since I really liked episode 6. It still fails to take advantage of quite a few elements and keeps us in the dark about the guild members while dragging out fights that don’t need to be dragged out so much. I’m looking at you, Clementine fight.
So yeah, Overlord wasn’t bad. Has a ton of wasted potential and focuses on things that aren’t particularly strong as if they were, but not a bad watch.
