First of all, let me just say that I have no interest in writing a harem story. Too often they’re cliche and the main character ends up with an obvious choice despite there being at least two other objectively better choices. But mostly, it’s because the girls in harems are too often just a mixture of fetishes.
Harem High School is pretty much no different.
I should tell you that I have almost no details about any of the characters. Like most dreams, once I’m awake I only have fuzzy images in my head that give me clues about what I dreamt, and they often fade quickly.
Here’s what I do remember: The main character is responsible for organizing a team of five girls to pilot five mecha kept on the school grounds for… some reason I don’t recall. Each girl on campus has an affinity with one (and ONLY one) of the five mecha. The higher their affinity for the mecha, the better they can pilot it overall. But each girl is capable of unlocking their own personalized techniques with the mecha.
I guess it’s the main character’s duty to get to know candidates better by dating them and recruiting the ones he likes best (or the ones best suited to the job, whatever). Further proving that these girls are pretty much just objects, their attributes are recorded on what look like trading cards, with a symbol stamped on the lower-right corner that represents which mecha they’re attuned to.
The only character I can recall is a generic-looking brunette with long pigtails and a red bow on her head. On the corner of her card is a symbol that looks like a cursive-looking “4.” I can only assume this is the generic lead heroine.
Given this premise, I’m sure I can come up with a much better name. But it was certainly “Harem High School” in my dream. Seriously? That title doesn’t say anything about the mecha aspect. I’m so disappointed in my subconscious. And while this certainly sounds like something suited to a video game, it was presented in anime form. Truly, truly disappointing.
YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS, MORPHEUS.
I occasionally think my dreams are inspired. I just had one the other night. If you write down what you remember as soon as you awake and think about it to make it concrete, you can hold on. Of course then you really think about it a few hours later and, well …
It’s like that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry turns out to have remembered a piece of Manos: The Hands of Fate in his sleep.
Incidentally,
Does there need to be one?
