I’m steadily getting better at this. Really happy to have this chapter out there.
Just as a note, I’m back to using Imgur galleries instead of hosting full chapters on Cheesecake.
The first chapter was kind of a mess since it was my first time working on a scanlation project. I started it on a whim, learned as I got going, and often found myself doing one thing, then going back and doing it another way. With this chapter, I found myself adhering to a stricter process. I started out by scanning everything in one session. Then I focused on cleaning all the pages and doing rescans as necessary. Then I focused on the Spanish translations. Finally, the typesetting and Japanese “patch” translations as necessary.
The scanning only took an hour. The cleaning took a couple of days. The translation took an hour, but typesetting and double-checking with the Japanese translation took three days. So overall, I had to use the full week.
This chapter was about 24 pages long and simple for the most part. The third chapter is twice as long. It might take me two weeks to work on it, or I might be done with it this time next week. I’m almost certainly going to miss uploading on Batoto Saturday (which is just an unofficial release goal I set for myself), but I think it’s possible to get the chapter up in time for a regular Monday post.
Can I maintain a weekly schedule? Well, if I can make it through the upcoming chapter and the next (which is closer to 30 pages long and not the 50-page monstrosity I’m looking at right now) it should be smooth sailing. The final chapter is broken up into 9 parts (which seems to be how it was presented in RPG Magazine) and most of those parts are less than 10 pages each. There’s no Spanish equivalent, so I’ll have to translate them entirely from Japanese, but it’s a lot less work overall.
Anyway, regarding Chapter 2, the two trickiest things I had to deal with were the name of the treasure and the use of slurring. Machine translators just don’t work well with slurring (I have to do a bit more deciphering than I prefer), and I haven’t been around enough drunk people to use genuine drunk talk.
One of the things I liked most about this chapter was how it effectively wasn’t in the anime. The bartender shows up briefly in the second episode, but his fight with Miguel is, well, a fistfight, not a drinking contest. At least we got us some Waitress Ihrie.
And my note on half of Ruin Explorers hentai being based on this chapter may be a bit of an exaggeration. 3 out of a dozen random pics are based on this chapter, and 4 out of 6 Ruin Explorers doujins (the latest of them being drawn as recently as 2011) make a direct reference to the chapter, with 1 of them actually being about Rasha doing a striptease!
Speaking of Rasha, it’s great to see her actually lose her clothes for once. Usually it’s only Ihrie, and as much as I love her, she’s canonically the least feminine girl in the series, whereas Rasha’s always been kind of a bombshell. Alas, it’s never Fam’s turn, is it?
