Talk about a turnaround! Pinkie Pie episodes always deliver!
Twilight invites delegates (including actual yak royalty in Prince Rutherford) from the faraway country of Yakyakistan, hoping to make friends of them for the first time in over 1000 moons… however long that is in Equestria. Unfortunately, all attempts to replicate Yakyakistani culture results in displease and smashing.
It’s up to Pinkie Pie to hold a party that will satisfy the yaks. No pressure.
Pinkie leaves Ponyville and heads straight for Yakyakistan to find the perfect cultural piece for her party, but sheep block the train tracks, so she leaves the train at Dodge Junction, where she reunites with Cherry Jubilee.
Cherry Jubilee gives Pinkie a ride to the Crystal Empire, but she and her entire train of horses fall asleep (while running), causing them to fall into a ravine, get rescued by the Wonderbolts, land in the Crystal Empire, and for some reason Pinkie becomes one of the Beatles.
Meanwhile, the yaks have had enough insulting attempts to replicate their culture, so they leave Ponyville with the promise of returning with more yaks… to DECLARE WAR!
Well, Twilight… looks like you done screwed up.
Pinkie makes it to Yakyakistan… but slides down a slope at the last second, miraculously sending her careening back into Ponyville, accomplishing absolutely nothing. Coincidentally, she arrives back at Sugar Cube Corner just as her friends stumble upon her secret… PinkieCave, I guess… and discover that she has highly detailed files on every resident of Ponyville so she can hold the best parties. She is literally Batman.
Anyway, she’s reassured that she’s the best party planning pony for the job, plus the yaks won’t be going anywhere since the sheep still have the train tracks stalled. This gives her enough time to hold a party for the yaks that is about showing them how ponies in Ponyville have a good time, rather than trying to reproduce Yakyakistani customs. The yaks love the party and promise to be friends for the next thousand moons.
Gotta say, I really loved this episode. Fans seem to be a bit split on whether the yak characters were any good. I, for one, loved them. Does the bit of them wrecking stuff for not being 100% accurate get old? Maybe, depending on your threshold. I loved it every single time.
This time there’s no question. We finally have a truly legendary meme to work with: THEY’RE JUST SO CHEESY!
Apparently, according to Pinkie’s files, Twilight has a fear of quesadillas. Twilight says she isn’t afraid of them… they’re just… so… CHEESY!
It’s literally the best possible thing to come out of this season so far.
I was really hoping Cherry Jubilee would shine this episode, but she honestly didn’t have much screentime.
I’m going to have to give this one to Prince Rutherford. Yeah, he’s just a one-note joke character. But it’s a spectacular note.
Though honorable mention goes to Pinkie Pie. The only reason she didn’t win out for me is because just because it’s a Pinkie Pie episode doesn’t necessarily mean the reason it was a good episode was because of Pinkie.
Doublewbrothers has been making some great comics for each episode of the season, and the comic for this episode just really stood out because it was so on the nose when it comes to ways to solve the conflicts of the episode… y’know, if this weren’t a kids’ show.
Do it, Celestia. Destroy them all.
Welp, Amending Fences is the next episode, and it’s the one I’ve been wanting to see. Twilight reconnects with her old Canterlot friends. Can’t wait to see some relevant Minuette! Maybe she’ll actually attend Moondancer’s party!
Also, we recently got the first trailer for Equestria Girls: Friendship games. And you know what that means! MORE SUNSET SHIMMER!
