The Watchening: GATE Ep. 3

BAH GAWD! Business is about to pick up!
BAH GAWD! Business is about to pick up!

The pace is finally picking up past the equivalent of one chapter / one episode.  Maybe we’ll get to the siege of Italica in two episodes!

We unfortunately completely skip the flashback that shows us the dragon’s attack on the settlement.  Maybe they’re saving that for a later episode.

The people of Coda Village ditch the village to escape the dragon, and we’re introduced to Lelei and her mentor, who stands out a LOT more than the manga version, so… there’s that.

Meanwhile, the Bandits Who Don’t Do Anything get slaughtered by Rory Mercury, the Gothic Lolita / Emissary of the God of Death, Emloy.

Well I'll be. They kept it as "Rory." But why "Emloy?"
Well I’ll be. They kept it as “Rory.” But why “Emloy?”

Again, no gore, as is expected.  But it’s not like I’m in it for the gore… It’s just a little distracting and strange.  Sometimes, we NEED a little gore.  We need confirmed on-screen kills.  It adds to the intensity of the situation.

We seriously gave a discretion shot to a HORSE. Counter: 7

Rory killed a LOT of bandits, but most weren't discretion shots. They were merely bloodless kills. You see a metal flash, and the bandits fall over dead. It's like Power Ranger sparks. Counter: 8

I’ll touch upon this in a bit, but first, let’s talk about the JSDF’s meeting with Rory.

It’s like Ever17 pensex levels of entendre.

Oh my...
Oh my…
OH MY!
OH MY!

Anyway, the dragon shows up and attacks the refugees.

Discretion Shot Counter: 10? Were people actually killed?

The JSDF fights the dragon off with Rory’s help, but many families are displaced due to all the deaths I wasn’t aware happened.

Rest in peace, horses and carts.
Rest in peace, horses and carts.

Seriously, that’s the biggest problem with the discretion shots in this episode: you literally couldn’t tell the total scope of the carnage of the dragon’s attack.  At least the first episode implied deaths; in this episode, it’s completely vague whether or not anyone died during the attack until AFTER the attack.

Anyway, that’s not even my biggest gripe with the episode.  My biggest gripe is THIS:

KURI, WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOOOOOOOOU?!
KURI, WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOOOOOOOOU?!

A FUCKING SIDE TAIL!  IS SHE A SOLDIER, OR A MIDDLE SCHOOLER?!

Sigh.

Well, at least I can look forward to covering nearly all of the manga’s current progress.  There’s got to be a slightly more brutal BD of this later on, right?  Right?  I mean, I’m not asking for mutilation and rape and whatnot, but… confirmed onscreen deaths?  Please?

Still… oh gawd, Kuri… there’s no saving you, is there?
