Well, this series finally has my attention.
We begin the episode with an introduction to an actually interesting character: the Head Warrior (seriously?) Gazef, a warrior of common birth who became the most trusted warrior of his king. It seems there may be a plot by the nobles to get him out of the way so the king will be vulnerable. But despite the risk he puts to his king, he can’t ignore the plight of the villagers in the outskirts of the kingdom.
Basically, he’s the exact opposite of Logan Thackeray.
Anyway, a lot of villages are being attacked by armored men, apparently belonging to a neighboring kingdom. Momonga sees one such attack through what’s essentially a scrying mirror. Again, we see that some force is inhibiting his normal human personality, and he feels no need to rescue the village… until he looks at Sebas and is reminded of his designer, Touch Me, who once saved Momonga back when he was a newbie.
One of my complaints from the earlier episodes was that I was interested in the history Momonga had with his other guildmates, and I was hoping for flashbacks to flesh out this guild, especially since the guild is a large part of what makes this character and his motivations. The idea that it would be mostly about his interactions with his NPCs and investigating this new world didn’t interest me as much as exploring his relationship with his guildmates. Now, I know that wouldn’t make for a great series, but Overlord didn’t really give me anything else to be invested in.
So, Momonga goes out into the field and rescues the village while testing out his powers. Turns out he’s pretty OP. He slaughters soldiers with magic and turns a corpse into his Death Knight, a sort of zombie warrior that’s unstoppable.
Momonga introduces himself as Ains Ooal Gown (the name of his guild) to the villagers and soldiers, hoping to spread this name just in case there are other Yggdrasil players out there in this new world. Let’s hope that’s the case, as it would be nice for this series not to end with it all being a dream.
So yeah… for the most part this episode is just slaughtering the soldiers. Momonga gathers information about the new world he’s in and learns that there are two rival kingdoms and an additional land to the south that may have sent in their own people in disguise to frame one of the kingdoms and start a war. He also learns his Yggdrasil currency is only worth as much as the gold it’s made out of.
Gazef FINALLY shows up in the last few minutes of the episode, and we’re told the village has been surrounded by an unknown force. We don’t even see this force when the episode just ends.
Wow, what a crappy way to end the episode.
We didn’t get a lot of the NPCs in this episode, which feels kinda weird. We got Sebas, so that’s good. The only other one we saw was Albedo, completely covered in armor. Wow. Take the most boring character in the series and cover up the only thing about her that makes her even remotely appealing. Spectacular decision there.
